The Zulu ancestors first setlled in Zululand in the late 1700's and brought forth great kings and warriors like Shaka, Dingane, Mpanda and Dinizulu. According to legend king Shaka bathed here at "die oog" (eye) on his numerous hunting trips.

The waterhole in our jacuzzi area forms part of the original "Shaka's Bath". With Thangami's natural warm water source, unique mud fountain with its medical and cosmetic properties as well as the variety of game and bird life, it is no surprise that this area formed part of the hunting grounds of the Zulu monarque.

Mpanda was crowned king of the Zulus by commander Andries Pretorius on 14 February 1884 at Mpanda's rock in the valley just below Thangami.

On 5 August1884, Thaka Zulu was part of the land that was sworn in to form the New Republic with Vryheid as capital.

The area has a history of battles where Boer, Brit and Zulu all tried to get hold of this part of the country. Thangami Safari Spa is part of the Natal Battlefiels Route. Take a one day tour to some of the most historical battle sites in South Africa like Blood River, Hlobane, Kambula, Lancaster Hill and Rorke's Drift where the highest number of Victoria Crosses were awarded.

Close to Thangami are Hluhluwe Umfolozi Park and Itala Game Reserve where you can meet the "Big Five".

All the water in our pools is natural warm mineral water which originates from seven springs in the area. It contains 37 mineral of which sulphur is the most common. The water is kept as natural as possible and no chemicals are added. Twice a week we drain, clean and refill the pools.

In the valley we have our open mud pool where the whole family can have fun.
